Prunus armeniaca, despite the species name, originated in northern China and reached the Mediterranean via the Silk Road. The color is the inside of a sun-ripe apricot at the moment it splits open: a soft, slightly pink orange with the matte finish of velvet-skinned stone fruit. Lighter than peach, warmer than salmon.
