Latin sūmptuōsus, expensive — derived from sūmptus (expense). As a color modifier, sumptuous implies a saturated-and-rich-and-luxurious quality, the deep-rich color of Burgundy-and-Champagne-Court late-medieval silk-and-velvet livery in the Très-Riches-Heures manuscript tradition. The Japanese word for the red dye extracted from safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) — laid down in thin layers on wooden trays for the cosmetics, kimono linings, and woodblock-print pigments of Edo-period Japan. The deepest layer was reserved for the aristocracy and could cost as much as gold by weight. The color refers to a fully developed beni on washi paper: a saturated, slightly cool red with the matte finish of plant dye. Cooler than crimson, warmer than rose.
