Elfin Tarbuttite
Elfin Tarbuttite (#CDCDE8) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (240°, 37%, 86%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. Etymology
Old English ælf, elf — adjectival suffix -in. As a color modifier, elfin implies a pale-and-small-and-mischievous-magical quality, the pale color of Tolkien-and-Lord-of-the-Rings and Pre-Raphaelite-painting elf-and-supernatural fey-and-magical iconography. Sits at the pale-and-ethereal end of the grid, parallel to fairylike and sylphine in usage.
Rare zinc-phosphate mineral first described from the Broken Hill lead-zinc deposits of Zambia in 1907, also found at Reaphook Hill in South Australia. Tarbuttite color refers to a deep-violet Broken Hill tarbuttite crystal cluster: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the glassy finish of zinc-phosphate mineral. Named for Percy Coventry Tarbutt, an early-20th-century mining-company director.
