Airy Periwinkle (#CCCFE9) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Greek aēr, air — adjectival suffix -y, sharing root with Latin āer. As a color modifier, airy implies a pale-and-light-and-airborne quality, the pale color of Provençal-and-Tuscan mid-summer afternoon-warm-and-airy atmospheric-and-spatial-condition. Sits at the pale-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to aerial and atmospheric in usage.
Vinca minor, the trailing groundcover of European woodland whose pale blue-violet flowers gave English the color name in the eighteenth century. Distinct from Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar periwinkle, the source of vincristine for chemotherapy). The color refers to the corolla of a fresh Vinca flower: a soft, slightly violet-shifted pale blue with the matte finish of five-petaled bloom. Lighter than bluebell, cooler than lavender.
