Bleached Genji
Bleached Genji (#CACEE8) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (232°, 39%, 85%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary amber. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
The past participle of bleach, to whiten by chemical or solar action. Used as a color modifier since the medieval period for hues that have lost their original saturation through chemical treatment or sun exposure. The eponymous nobleman of The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari, 1010 CE) by Murasaki Shikibu, whose silk-on-silk court robes were dyed in graduated layers of murasaki and aizome. Genji color refers to a layered Heian-period court robe in the kasane no irome tradition: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the silk luster of multi-layer kasane dyeing.
