Lightened Genji
Lightened Genji (#CACCF0) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (237°, 56%, 87%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English lēoht, light — past-participle of lighten. As a color modifier, lightened implies a pale-and-tone-raised-and-lightened quality, the pale color of Mid-Century-Modern pale-and-tone-raised interior-decoration paint-and-textile surface. Sits at the pale-and-light end of the grid, parallel to whitened and bleached in usage.
The eponymous nobleman of The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari, 1010 CE) by Murasaki Shikibu, whose silk-on-silk court robes were dyed in graduated layers of murasaki and aizome. Genji color refers to a layered Heian-period court robe in the kasane no irome tradition: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the silk luster of multi-layer kasane dyeing.
