Live Zǐ
Live Zǐ (#C99BFE) is a soft indigo with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (268°, 98%, 80%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary lime. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English libban, to live — used as a color word since the nineteenth century for hues that read as active or animate. Live wire, live color: the implication is luminance combined with the optical impression of internal motion. Sits in the bright-bucket center alongside vivid and vibrant.
Chinese 紫, purple — the imperial court color of the Tang and Song dynasties, derived from Lithospermum erythrorhizon (gromwell) and overdyed with Polygonum tinctorium. Zǐ color refers to a Tang-dynasty imperial robe field: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the silk luster of multi-bath gromwell-root-and-indigo overdye on tussah silk. Cooler than zǐsè (formal deep purple).
