Drifting Edo
Drifting Edo (#C6CAE4) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (232°, 36%, 84%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Etymology
Old Norse drift, driving — present-participle of drift. As a color modifier, drifting implies a pale-and-slow-moving-and-lateral quality where the hue carries the visual register of cloud-and-fog slow-and-lateral atmospheric movement. Sits at the pale-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to floating and wandering in usage.
The Tokugawa shogunate's capital (1603–1867), now Tokyo — and the period when aizome indigo dyeing democratized to commoners under sumptuary laws restricting brighter colors to the daimyo class. Edo color refers to an Edo-komon indigo-dyed cotton: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of fermentation-vat aizome dye on commoner cotton.
