Old English scimerian, to glisten — present-participle of shimmer, sharing root with shine. A magnesium-iron silicate gem — cordierite — whose strong dichroism (different colors from different angles) reportedly served Viking navigators as a polarizing filter to locate the sun through cloud. The color refers to a faceted iolite seen along its strong axis: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted deep blue-purple with the gem's signature internal complexity.
