Pressed Lazurite
Pressed Lazurite (#C4CDF1) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (228°, 62%, 86%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Latin pressāre, to press — past-participle of press. As a color modifier, pressed implies a clear-and-smoothed-and-flattened quality, the crisp color of Mid-Century-Modern freshly-pressed-shirt-and-trouser ironed-textile finish. The principal mineral of lapis lazuli — a sodium-aluminum sulfate-silicate from the Sar-e-Sang mines in Badakhshan province of northeastern Afghanistan, the Renaissance source for ultramarine pigment. Lazurite color refers to a freshly cut Sar-e-Sang lapis face showing the central lazurite nucleus: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of pyrite-flecked lazurite ore.
