Thinned Aizu
Thinned Aizu (#C3BDDD) is a soft indigo with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (251°, 32%, 80%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English thynne, thin — past-participle of thin. As a color modifier, thinned implies a pale-and-attenuated quality, the pale color of Old-Master-and-Modernist studio-paint heavy-medium-thinned glaze-and-tone reduced-pigment surface. Sits at the pale-and-diluted end of the grid, parallel to watery and diluted in usage.
Japanese feudal domain (Aizu-han) of the Edo period — a samurai region in modern Fukushima famous for aizu-momen, the indigo-dyed cotton woven by samurai-class women during the Tokugawa shogunate's lean years. Aizu color refers to a freshly aizu-momen-woven indigo cotton: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of multi-bath natural indigo on hand-spun cotton.
