Powdery Charoite
Powdery Charoite (#C2BBD9) is a soft indigo with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (254°, 28%, 79%) places it in the muted band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old French poudre, powder — adjectival suffix -y. As a color modifier, powdery implies a pale-and-fine-grain-and-soft quality, the pale color of Mid-Century-Modern pale-and-fine-powder-textured cosmetic-and-textile-finish surface. Sits at the pale-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to chalky and dusty in usage.
Russian violet-banded mineral mined exclusively along the Chara River in Yakutia, eastern Siberia, since the 1940s. Charoite color refers to a polished Yakutian charoite cabochon: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the silky chatoyant finish of fibrous strontium-potassium-calcium silicate. The only deep-violet mineral mined commercially in Russia, valued for its complex banded patterning.
