Chilled Kalmia
Chilled Kalmia (#BFC2E1) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (235°, 36%, 82%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Old English cele, cold — past-participle of chill. North American mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) — an Ericaceae evergreen shrub native to Appalachia, with cup-shaped pink-and-violet pentahedral flowers in late spring. Kalmia color refers to a fully bloomed Kalmia latifolia corymb: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the velvet finish of fused-petaled cup flowers around a tense ring of bow-loaded stamens. Named for Pehr Kalm, Linnaeus's Swedish-Finnish student-botanist.
