Liminal Cordierite
Liminal Cordierite (#BFBCD3) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (248°, 21%, 78%) places it in the muted band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Latin līminis, threshold — adjectival suffix -al, sharing root with limen (door-sill). As a color modifier, liminal implies a pale-and-edge-and-threshold-and-transitional quality, the pale color of dawn-and-dusk civil-and-nautical-twilight transitional-light atmospheric-condition. Sits at the pale-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to threshold-thin and transitional in usage.
Silicate mineral marketed as the gemstone iolite — pleochroic deep-blue-violet from one viewing angle and pale-yellow from another. The Vikings reportedly used thin slices as polarizing filters to locate the sun through cloud (sólarsteinn). Cordierite color refers to a cleaved Norwegian cordierite cabochon viewed along the deep-blue axis: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the glassy finish of pleochroic gem silicate.
