Old English lēona-heorte, lion's-heart — referring to Richard I Lionheart (1157–1199). Named after the Greek city of Korinth, where the small dried grapes once exported to Europe took the name raisins de Corinthe. The color refers to the redcurrant (Ribes rubrum), a translucent, slightly blue-shifted red that tilts toward magenta when pressed for jelly.
