Faint Smithsonite
Faint Smithsonite (#BDDCC8) is a soft green with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (141°, 31%, 80%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary magenta. Etymology
Old French faindre, to feign, weaken — used as a color modifier since the fifteenth century for hues that read as barely present. Faint pink, faint blue: very low saturation combined with high lightness. Sits at the pale-bucket extreme alongside whispered and ghostly.
A zinc carbonate mineral — named for English chemist James Smithson (founder of the Smithsonian Institution). The blue-green variety is mined principally in New Mexico's Magdalena Mountains. The color refers to a polished blue-green smithsonite cabochon: a soft, slightly cool deep blue-green with the satin finish of botryoidal zinc-carbonate mineral.
