Dappled Mulberry (#BBACBE) is a soft violet with a cool character. It leans cool, sitting on the blue, green, and violet side of the wheel. Old Norse depill, spot / pool — past-participle of dapple. As a color modifier, dappled implies a pale-and-mottled-and-light-and-shadow-spotted quality, the pale color of summer-orchard sun-through-leaves dappled-light-and-shadow ground-pattern surface. Sits at the pale-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to speckled and mottled in usage.
The genus Morus — the white mulberry (M. alba) feeds silkworms; the black mulberry (M. nigra) bears the deep purple fruit that stains everything it touches. The color refers to a ripe black mulberry: a saturated, slightly red-shifted very deep purple with the slight juiciness of a compound fruit. Cooler than wine, warmer than indigo, with the agricultural weight of a tree that supported the entire Chinese silk industry for two thousand years.
