Dappled Ifrita

#bacbe7
Notes

Dappled Ifrita (#BACBE7) is a soft azure with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (217°, 48%, 82%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary amber. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Dappled
adjective

Old Norse depill, spot / pool — past-participle of dapple. As a color modifier, dappled implies a pale-and-mottled-and-light-and-shadow-spotted quality, the pale color of summer-orchard sun-through-leaves dappled-light-and-shadow ground-pattern surface. Sits at the pale-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to speckled and mottled in usage.

Ifrita
noun

Ifrita kowaldi, the blue-capped ifrita — a small Papua New Guinea songbird with saturated deep-blue crown plumage and (uniquely among birds) toxic skin and feathers from a sequestered batrachotoxin diet. The color refers to a male ifrita's crown: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the satin finish of structurally-colored small-bird feathers.
