Magisterial Yamabuki

Latin magisterium, teacher's office — adjectival suffix -al. As a color modifier, magisterial implies a saturated-and-authoritative-and-formal quality, the deep-rich color of Qing-dynasty civil-magistrate court-and-ritual textiles and Imperial-Examination scholar-class livery. Kerria japonica, the Japanese rose-family shrub whose bright yellow-orange flowers cover steep hillsides in late spring. Yamabuki-iro (mountain-rose color) gave Japanese its name for a saturated yellow-orange hue used in court robes and woodblock prints. The color refers to a fully open kerria flower: a saturated, slightly red-shifted yellow-orange with the satin finish of small five-petaled bloom. Warmer than canary, lighter than marigold.
