Genuine Bark Topaz

Latin genuinus, natural, innate — used as a color modifier since the sixteenth century for hues that read as authentic rather than imitated. Genuine indigo, genuine ochre: moderate-to-high saturation combined with the optical impression of a hue from real pigment rather than synthetic dye. Sits at the crisp-bucket alongside true and honest.

Old Norse bǫrkr, bark. As a color modifier, bark implies a tree-bark-and-rough-and-cork quality, the visual register of birch-and-oak-and-cork-bark hand-stripped-and-cork-bark birch-and-oak-and-cork-tree-bark hand-stripped-tree-bark surfaces under birch-and-oak-and-cork-bark hand-stripped-bark forest light. A fluorine aluminum silicate gem, hardness 8 on the Mohs scale, mined for centuries in Ouro Preto, Brazil. Imperial topaz is the prized variety: a warm, slightly pink-shifted gold-orange with the high refractive index of a quality cut stone. Cooler than amber, brighter than honey, with the gem's signature internal fire when held to light. Named for the island of Topazos in the Red Sea, though that source produced peridot instead.
