Latin animātus, given-life — past-participle of animāre, derived from anima (soul, breath). As a color modifier, animated implies a saturated-and-life-given quality where the hue carries visual movement-and-vitality. Iron-rich earth pigment — humanity's oldest known coloring material, used in burial ornament 100,000 years ago.
