Old English scaterian, to scatter — past-participle of scatter. As a color modifier, scattered implies a pale-and-randomly-distributed-and-fragmented quality where the hue carries the visual register of random-and-irregular deposit-pattern decorative-and-irregular distribution. Japanese 紫根, gromwell root (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) — the purple-root dye source for traditional Japanese murasaki and the medicinal-herb base for the eponymous shikon ointment used in burn treatment. Shikon color refers to a freshly harvested Lithospermum erythrorhizon root cross-section: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the matte finish of fresh root dye on hand-spun silk.
