Earnest Annatto
Earnest Annatto (#AE3637) is a true red with an earthy character. It leans grounded and natural, the kind of color that plays well with wood, clay, linen, and warm neutrals. Etymology
Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Bixa orellana, the tropical shrub whose seeds yield a red-orange dye used as food coloring (in cheese, butter, and margarine) and as body paint by the Caribbean and Central American indigenous peoples. The color refers to fresh annatto paste: a saturated, slightly orange red with the matte finish of plant-derived pigment. Warmer than vermillion, drier than tomato.
