Royal Azalea
Royal Azalea (#AE1485) is a true magenta with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (316°, 79%, 38%) places it in the highly saturated band at a mid lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Etymology
The blue of European royal court dress and regalia from the late seventeenth century forward — the color of British peers' robes, French royal sashes, the lining of the crown-jewel cases. The color refers to a saturated, slightly violet-shifted blue with the matte finish of velvet or melton wool dyed to maximum intensity: deeper than cornflower, warmer than ultramarine, with the heraldic weight of a color reserved for monarchs and the official Crown.
Rhododendron subgenus Pentanthera — particularly the deep-magenta Rhododendron indicum cultivars (the Japanese satsuki azalea), cultivated as bonsai and bedding shrubs since the Heian period. Azalea color refers to a fully bloomed Rhododendron indicum terminal truss in a Kyoto temple garden: a saturated, slightly cool deep magenta with the velvet finish of fresh five-petaled bell-flowers in dense terminal clusters.
