Earnest Carnelian
Earnest Carnelian (#AB000B) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (356°, 100%, 34%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Sits in the bold-and-quiet corner of the grid, slightly less luminous than resolute and slightly less institutional than imperial.
A translucent variety of chalcedony tinted by trace iron, carnelian was the seal stone of the ancient world — Roman intaglios, Indus Valley etched beads, the breastplate of the Israelite high priest. The name comes from the Latin carneolus, of flesh. The color is exactly that: a warm, low-saturation red that reads as both stone and skin, more orange than crimson, more body than blood.
