Sprayed Periwinkle (#AAAAC4) is a soft blue with a cool character. It leans cool, sitting on the blue, green, and violet side of the wheel. Quiet and dependable, a fit for product UI and data visualization. Its HSL profile (240°, 18%, 72%) places it in the muted band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. Etymology
Middle Dutch sprayen, to spray — past-participle of spray. As a color modifier, sprayed implies a pale-and-fine-droplet-and-mist-applied quality, the pale color of Mid-Century-Modern spray-painted automotive-and-furniture finely-atomized-and-fine-droplet-pattern surface-finish. Sits at the pale-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to misted and atomized in usage.
Vinca minor, the trailing groundcover of European woodland whose pale blue-violet flowers gave English the color name in the eighteenth century. Distinct from Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar periwinkle, the source of vincristine for chemotherapy). The color refers to the corolla of a fresh Vinca flower: a soft, slightly violet-shifted pale blue with the matte finish of five-petaled bloom. Lighter than bluebell, cooler than lavender.
