Genuine Indygo

#aaa5e3
Notes

Genuine Indygo (#AAA5E3) is a soft blue with a cool character. It leans cool, sitting on the blue, green, and violet side of the wheel. Quiet and dependable, a fit for product UI and data visualization. Its HSL profile (245°, 53%, 77%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Genuine
adjective

Latin genuinus, natural, innate — used as a color modifier since the sixteenth century for hues that read as authentic rather than imitated. Genuine indigo, genuine ochre: moderate-to-high saturation combined with the optical impression of a hue from real pigment rather than synthetic dye. Sits at the crisp-bucket alongside true and honest.

Indygo
noun

Polish for indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) — adopted into Polish color terminology during the 18th-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's textile-trade contact with Ottoman indigo merchants. Indygo color refers to a freshly indygo-dyed Polish-folk linen: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of multi-bath fermentation indigo on hand-spun linen. Cooler than English indigo and warmer than Russian fioletovyy.
