Hushed Calico

#a99ca0
Notes

Hushed Calico (#A99CA0) is a balanced neutral with a mono character. It's a grayscale value, at home in typography, dividers, and the structural layer beneath stronger colors. Its HSL profile (342°, 7%, 64%) places it in the muted band at a mid lightness. It works well as secondary text, borders, and placeholder states. A reliable middle gray that reads cleanly in either light or dark contexts. Pair it with almost any saturated accent. It's built to sit underneath or behind stronger colors without fighting them.

Etymology

Hushed
adjective

The past participle of hush, to silence — used as a color modifier since the late nineteenth century for hues that read as if turned down. Hushed pink, hushed lavender: low saturation combined with optical quietness. Sits at the hushed-bucket center alongside muted.

Calico
noun

Calico-cotton — the pale-cool-pale-gray-and-white unbleached-cotton-cloth of pre-modern Indian-and-American-textile manufacture, named after the Calicut (Kozhikode) port-of-export. Calico color refers to a freshly hand-loomed Calicut-period calico-cloth in raking sun: a pale cool gray with the matte finish of unbleached hand-spun-and-hand-loomed cotton with the characteristic calico-pattern small-floral block-print.
