Middle Dutch spange, clasp / metal-disc — past-participle of spangle. North American native Joe-Pye Weed (Eupatorium purpureum) — a six-foot-tall prairie perennial with terminal corymbs of dusty mauve-violet disk-flowers attractive to Monarchs in their fall migration. Eupatorium color refers to a fully bloomed Joe-Pye Weed corymb: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the velvet finish of dense disk-flower clusters. Named for Mithridates Eupator, the herbal-medicine king of Pontus.
