Phantom Charoite
Phantom Charoite (#A7A6C8) is a soft blue with a cool character. It leans cool, sitting on the blue, green, and violet side of the wheel. Quiet and dependable, a fit for product UI and data visualization. Its HSL profile (242°, 24%, 72%) places it in the muted band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Greek phántasma, apparition — adjectival usage of phantom. As a color modifier, phantom implies a pale-and-ghostly-and-translucent quality, the pale color of Edwardian-spirit-photograph and Pre-Raphaelite-painting ghostly-and-apparition supernatural-iconography. Sits at the pale-and-ethereal end of the grid, parallel to ghostly and wraithlike in usage.
Russian violet-banded mineral mined exclusively along the Chara River in Yakutia, eastern Siberia, since the 1940s. Charoite color refers to a polished Yakutian charoite cabochon: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the silky chatoyant finish of fibrous strontium-potassium-calcium silicate. The only deep-violet mineral mined commercially in Russia, valued for its complex banded patterning.
