Old English līne, line / cord — past-participle of line. The French word for ultramarine — literally beyond-the-sea, naming the lapis-lazuli pigment imported from Afghanistan via Mediterranean trade routes. The color refers to a freshly mixed outremer pigment in oil: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted deep blue.
