Washed Ammolite (#A3C2B4) is a true teal with a cool character. It leans cool, sitting on the blue, green, and violet side of the wheel. Old English wascan, to wash — past-participle of wash. As a color modifier, washed implies a pale-and-tone-reduced quality where the hue carries the visual register of multi-decade Connecticut-laundry-line repeatedly-washed-and-faded textile color-finish. Sits at the pale-and-faded end of the grid, parallel to faded and bleached in usage.
The fossilized iridescent shell of Placenticeras ammonites — mined principally from the Bearpaw Formation in southern Alberta, Canada. The color refers to a polished ammolite cabochon: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-green with the iridescent satin finish of structurally colored ancient nacre.
