Latin Īris, rainbow — adjectival suffix -escent, named for the Greek goddess of the rainbow. The color refers to a T. chrysantha (national tree of Venezuela) in bloom: a saturated, slightly red yellow with the satin finish of large trumpet-shaped flowers.
