Forthright Tugtupite

#9f257b
Notes

Forthright Tugtupite (#9F257B) is a true magenta with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (318°, 62%, 38%) places it in the balanced band at a mid lightness. It works across type, buttons, and borders, saturated enough to feel deliberate but balanced enough to not fight the rest of the palette. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary green. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Forthright
adjective

Old English forð-riht, straight ahead, direct. Used as a color modifier in Anglo-Saxon-revival contexts for hues that read as honest and unguarded. Forthright red, forthright blue: the saturation is full, the hue is presented without ornamentation or qualification. Sits in the bold-bucket center alongside frank and direct.

Tugtupite
noun

Rare beryllium-zinc silicate mineral first described from the Tugtup agtakôrfia (reindeer-blood place) deposit of Greenland in 1962. The mineral is fluorescent and tenebrescent (color-changes with UV exposure). Tugtupite color refers to a freshly UV-exposed Tugtup agtakôrfia tugtupite cabochon: a saturated, slightly cool deep magenta with the silky finish of tenebrescent beryllium-silicate. The Greenlandic name reflects Inuit reindeer-blood iconography.

Moderately saturated colors gain a small bump in P3 — the difference is usually visible side-by-side on wide-gamut hardware but won't change the character of the color.
