Engraved Yamaai
Engraved Yamaai (#9BA8FD) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (232°, 96%, 80%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary amber. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old French engraver, to dig in — past-participle of engrave. As a color modifier, engraved implies a clear-and-precisely-cut quality, the crisp color of Albrecht-Dürer-and-Hogarth hand-pulled engraving-print fine-line incised-image. Sits at the crisp-and-incised end of the grid, parallel to etched and inscribed in usage.
Japanese mountain indigo, Mercurialis leiocarpa — a wild herb used for dyeing in the Heian period (794–1185) before cultivated aizome indigo supplanted it. Yamaai color refers to a freshly yamaai-dyed silk: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of mineral-mordanted natural dye. The plant is the only naturally occurring indican-type indigo precursor in Japan.
