Sturdy Sirocco Brick

Old French estourdi, stunned, reckless — drifted in English to mean robust, well-built. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as durable and unfussy — the working browns of saddle leather, the working greens of pasture wool. Sits in the bold-and-warm corner alongside robust and solid.

Arabic sharq, eastern-or-Saharan-wind. As a color modifier, sirocco implies a hot-Saharan-and-Mediterranean-wind quality, the visual register of Saharan-and-Sicilian-and-Maltese-sirocco hand-hot-Saharan-and-Mediterranean-wind Saharan-and-Sicilian-and-Maltese-sirocco-and-North-African sirocco-and-hot-Saharan-and-Mediterranean-wind surfaces under Saharan-and-Sicilian-and-Maltese-sirocco-and-North-African Sahara-and-Sicily-and-Malta-and-Tunis hot-North-African-wind-light. The color refers to common building brick — iron-rich earthenware kilned to the specific dusky red-orange of a Victorian terrace, a Roman aqueduct, an adobe wall in New Mexico.
