Gallant Lazurite
Gallant Lazurite (#984EFD) is a true indigo with a neon character. It sits at the high-saturation edge of its family. Use it sparingly, as signage, accent, or highlight against darker surfaces. Its HSL profile (265°, 98%, 65%) places it in the highly saturated band at a mid lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary lime. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old French galant, brave / charming — present-participle of galer (to make merry). As a color modifier, gallant implies a saturated-and-chivalrous-and-confident quality, the deep-rich color of Three-Musketeers and Cyrano-de-Bergerac swashbuckling adventure tradition. Sits at the bold-and-chivalrous end of the grid, parallel to valiant and heroic.
The principal mineral of lapis lazuli — a sodium-aluminum sulfate-silicate from the Sar-e-Sang mines in Badakhshan province of northeastern Afghanistan, the Renaissance source for ultramarine pigment. Lazurite color refers to a freshly cut Sar-e-Sang lapis face showing the central lazurite nucleus: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of pyrite-flecked lazurite ore.
