Clean Aizome
Clean Aizome (#97ADF8) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (226°, 87%, 78%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary amber. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English clǣne, pure, free of dirt — used as a color modifier since the medieval period for hues that read as crisp and uncontaminated by other pigments. Clean white, clean blue: moderate saturation combined with optical clarity. Sits at the crisp-bucket center alongside clear and true.
The Japanese traditional indigo-dyeing technique — aizome — using Persicaria tinctoria (Japanese indigo) and natural fermentation in clay vats. The dyer is called aishi (indigo master), trained over decades. The color refers to a freshly aizome-dyed cotton: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the matte finish of multi-bath natural-indigo dye.
