Clear Yamaai
Clear Yamaai (#97A8F8) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (229°, 87%, 78%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary amber. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
From the Latin clarus, bright, distinct — used as a color modifier since the medieval period for hues without haze or mixing. Clear blue sky, clear green water: the implication is moderate saturation combined with optical clarity. Sits at the crisp-bucket center alongside clean and true.
Japanese mountain indigo, Mercurialis leiocarpa — a wild herb used for dyeing in the Heian period (794–1185) before cultivated aizome indigo supplanted it. Yamaai color refers to a freshly yamaai-dyed silk: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of mineral-mordanted natural dye. The plant is the only naturally occurring indican-type indigo precursor in Japan.
