An adjectival form of state, condition of dignity. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for the deep saturated jewel tones of formal ceremony — the deep blue of a robes-of-state, the deep red of a state-banquet velvet. Hamamelis virginiana, the North American shrub whose distinctive yellow ribbon-petaled flowers bloom in late autumn — and whose bark and leaves yield the astringent witch hazel extract. The color refers to a fresh Hamamelis bloom in November: a saturated, slightly red yellow with the satin finish of crinkled-ribbon petal.
