Stripped Russet
Stripped Russet (#974F03) is a deep orange with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Old English stripian, to strip — past-participle of strip. As a color modifier, stripped implies a clear-and-bared-and-unornamented quality, the crisp color of Cistercian-and-Bauhaus anti-ornamental stripped-down architectural interior. Sits at the crisp-and-stripped end of the grid, parallel to spare and bare in usage.
From the Old French rousset, reddish-brown. A medieval term for the coarse, undyed wool of peasant cloth — the natural red-brown of the local fleece. The color now refers to autumn foliage, the skin of a russet potato, the rust-stained sandstone of the American southwest. Earthier than rust, drier than mahogany; the red of October.
