Earnest Papaya
Earnest Papaya (#963C16) is a deep orange with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Carica papaya, the tropical fruit of Mesoamerica and now a global breakfast staple. The color refers to the inside of a ripe papaya: a saturated, slightly pink orange with the soft texture of melon. Brighter than salmon, warmer than coral, with the distinctive coral-orange that papain — the fruit's signature enzyme — extracts and sells as meat tenderizer.
