Old English ælf, elf — adjectival suffix -in. As a color modifier, elfin implies a pale-and-small-and-mischievous-magical quality, the pale color of Tolkien-and-Lord-of-the-Rings and Pre-Raphaelite-painting elf-and-supernatural fey-and-magical iconography.
