Latin rusticus, of the countryside — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as rural and unrefined. Shikon color refers to a freshly harvested Lithospermum erythrorhizon root cross-section: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the matte finish of fresh root dye on hand-spun silk.
