Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Episcia color refers to a fully opened Episcia cupreata tubular flower: a saturated, slightly cool deep magenta with the velvet finish of fresh fused-petaled tubular corolla. The genus name comes from the Greek episkios (shaded).
