Punchy Nadir Heliotrope

A modern adjectival form of punch, to strike sharply. Used as a color word since the early twentieth century for hues that read as highly contrasting and visually loud. Punchy red, punchy yellow: the implication is full saturation combined with optical impact. Sits across the bold and bright buckets, near vivid and striking.

Arabic naẓīr, opposite-of-zenith. As a color modifier, nadir implies a downward-pointing-and-low-point quality, the visual register of celestial-sphere-and-downward-Nadir hand-downward-pointing-and-low-point celestial-sphere-and-downward-and-Nadir-pole nadir-and-downward-pointing-and-low-point surfaces under celestial-sphere-and-downward-and-Nadir-pole astronomical-and-celestial-mechanics downward-axis-light. Sits at the modifier-and-cosmic end of the grid, parallel to zenith and axis in usage.

The genus Heliotropium — the cherry pie plant, named in Greek for its supposed habit of tracking the sun (heliotropism). The color refers to a fresh garden heliotrope cluster in late summer: a saturated, slightly red-shifted deep purple-blue with the matte finish of densely packed forget-me-not-style flowers. Cooler than mauve, warmer than indigo, with the perfumed weight of a flower whose vanilla-cherry scent fills a greenhouse.
