Etymology
Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Polygala color refers to a fully bloomed Polygala myrtifolia keel-flower on a Cape Floristic Region shrub: a saturated, slightly cool deep magenta with the velvet finish of fresh keel-shaped legume-form flower. The Greek poly-gala means much milk.
