Cavalier Tsutsuji
Cavalier Tsutsuji (#8E0C7C) is a deep violet with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (308°, 84%, 30%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Italian cavaliere, horseman / knight via Latin caballārius. As a color modifier, cavalier implies a saturated-and-chivalrous-and-aristocratic quality, the deep-rich color of English-Civil-War royalist Cavalier military-faction velvet-and-lace-and-feathered-hat livery. Sits at the bold-and-chivalrous end of the grid, parallel to gallant and knightly.
Japanese 躑躅, azalea (Rhododendron indicum and R. obtusum) — a beloved spring-flowering shrub of Japanese gardens, particularly the deep-magenta kirishima-tsutsuji cultivars from Kagoshima's Mt. Kirishima. Tsutsuji color refers to a fully bloomed kirishima-tsutsuji terminal truss in a Kyoto temple garden: a saturated, slightly cool deep magenta with the velvet finish of fresh five-petaled bell-flowers in dense terminal clusters.
