North American prairie blazing star (Liatris spicata) — its dense vertical spike of disk-flowers blooms top-down in late summer across midwestern tallgrass prairie. Liatris color refers to a fully bloomed Liatris spicata spike on a Wisconsin prairie remnant: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the velvet finish of fresh disk-flowers.
