Sturdy Akiq (#8B0203) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (360°, 97%, 28%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Etymology
Old French estourdi, stunned, reckless — drifted in English to mean robust, well-built. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as durable and unfussy — the working browns of saddle leather, the working greens of pasture wool. Sits in the bold-and-warm corner alongside robust and solid.
The Arabic word for carnelian — the translucent red chalcedony seal-stone of the Islamic world, traditionally believed to deflect evil. Used for carved engagement rings, prayer-bead strands, and the seal-stones of Mughal court documents. The color refers to a polished akiq cabochon: a soft, slightly translucent red-orange with the warmth of iron-stained chalcedony. Warmer than carnelian, drier than coral.
